JBugs understands the time, effort and money that go into a classic VW restoration, which is why we not only offer high quality, classic Volkswagen parts at the best prices, but we also offer step-by-step guides on how to properly install the new parts on your classic VW from the comfort of your own home. We want to help you achieve the best build without breaking the bank.
Today’s step-by-step guide shows how to install the VW running boards on a classic Volkswagen Beetle and, unlike most of our guides requiring a variety of tools, you will only need your hands and a wrench to complete this task.
Classic VW Running Board Installation
Remove the old running boards first by jacking up one side of the car and setting it on a jack stand
Get underneath the running board to find and remove the four 10 millimeter bolts against the body
At the front edge of the running board, remove the 13 millimeter bolt and nut
At the rear of the running board, remove another 13 millimeter bolt and nut
Remove the running board from the body and clean dirt or debris from where the running board sits
Note: By not cleaning the ledge the running board sits on, it causes a large gap from the front of the running board to the back
Loosen the bottom two 13 millimeter bolts from the back and front edge of the front fender
Place the new running board against the body over the ledge we cleaned earlier and loosely screw in four 10 millimeter bolts and washers
Loosely bolt the front and rear of the board to the front and rear fenders with 13 millimeter bolts, nuts and washers
Note: Make sure to install the rubber spacer in between the fenders and running board
With everything loosely bolted, go underneath the car and tighten the four 10 millimeter bolts
Note: Make sure to hold the running board to the body
Tighten the 13 millimeter bolts and nuts to the front and rear edge of the running board
Tighten the lower two bolts on the front and rear fender
Note: There should be a small gap between the fender and running board to reduce scratches on the paint or dents on the fender
Follow these steps to complete the running board installation on the other side of the VW Beetle
