EMPI asked CSF Radiators (high performance cooling experts) to develop a new, second to none, oil cooler for upright air-cooled performance engines. The oil cooler on the VW aircooled engine regulates oil temperature, which makes it very important to the health of the engine. If it does not function properly, there is no way to shed excess heat, which will burn the oil that lubricates the engine. The upright style oil cooler was used for all VW aircooled engines with upright fan shrouds through 1970. It was used in 1954 to 1970 Standard Beetles, 1956 to 1970 Karmann Ghias, and 1955 to 1970 Type 2 Bus models. The upright oil cooler shouldn't be used on later model "doghouse" cases as the adapter oil cooler seals don't quite work to seal the oil passages effectively.
