1974 VW Bus
Greg Mar
For the entirety of my wife's childhood, her single-parent mom (my mother-in-law) drove a VW Bus. All of my wife's relatives knew them by the Kombi. Tragically, ten years ago, my mom and my wife's mom died 3 days apart. Although I was blessed with peace at my mom's passing, my wife took it very hard. She was inconsolable and reached a very dark place. In an effort to do something to bring her back, I started researching her childhood's relationship with her mom and came up with the idea of giving here something that could remind her of her mom.
We live in deep south Texas and I found this gem in New York. I had it shipped and started the restoration process. I contacted her siblings, her relatives, and old friends trying to gather as much information as I could to get the Bus to be as exact a replica as her mom's. Well, lo and behold, after almost a year of secrecy and countless hours of work, sweat, and tears, the Kombi came to life!
On Mother's Day (a year after her mom's passing) I gave my wife her Kombi and let her know that she will always be with her!
