The VW Distributor Drive Gear Pinion installs into the distributor bore on the engine case and engages the timing gear. The distributor drive gear spacer fits 1954 through 1977 Standard Beetles, 1971 through 1979 Super Beetles, 1956 through 1974 Karmann Ghias, 1955 through 1979 Type 2 Bus models, 1962 through 1973 Type 3s, 1973 through 1974 Things, 1983 through 1991 Vanagons and 1986 through 1991 Syncros.

Our Expert's Take:

A tight fit is expected as the drive pinion slides into the case, especially if you are assembling an engine with all new components. Emory cloth can be used to polish the outside diameter of the pinion to ensure it slides smoothly into the engine case. Assembly lube is highly recommended when dropping the pinion into place.
