When installing this 2 Tip Glass Pack muffler on 1967 and earlier Beetles, and especially 1965 and earlier models that originally had a smaller displacement engine (and a smaller engine compartment) clearance may be tight against the rear apron, especially if there has been any damage to the rear of the car. "Muscling" the exhaust into place might be required, it fits 1300cc to 1600cc based engines, but fitting it on those engines in your early Beetle may take some work.
Black Paint is only a rust inhibitor! If the black paint is not removed before installation, it will burn off in a few hours. Regardless of where you purchase your exhaust, when buying an exhaust system we recommend stripping the exhaust with a good solvent or sanding the paint off and then painting the exhaust system with a high quality, high-temperature exhaust paint. None of our exhausts are warrantied against rust. If you want an exhaust with a durable finish consider a ceramic coated, chrome plated or stainless steel exhaust.

Why do my tail pipes point down?
We often times get this question when customers install a new 2-Tip GT Exhaust System (3418 or 55-3418). We agree that it does look a bit odd, but there is a simple reason: If the tail pipes did point straight back, they would interfere with the body.
We’re installing an engine with a 3418 exhaust in our Euro-Look Super Beetle and since we have yet to do body work and paint, we modified the exhaust so the pipes sit level with the engine. Test fitting the engine, we can see that the tail pipes hit the apron. We’ll end up modifying the apron so that the body clears which will require cutting and welding in new openings. This gives a visual explanation of why those pipes are pointed down. If they weren’t, they would hit the apron!
