Two Tip Style Exhaust System with Stainless Steel Tips for Classic VWs
- 1 3/8" Exhaust Tubing
- Glasspack muffler for a deeper sounding exhaust
- Stainless steel tail pipes that are both durable and they look good
- Tail pipes Exit out of stock apron cut outs for increased ground clearance
- Factory style heat risers for proper intake manifold heating
- Right side heat riser tube clears full flow and filter pumps
Our JBugs 2 tip glass pack muffler fits Standard and Super Beetles as well as Karmann Ghias with 1300cc to 1600cc based engines. We went above and beyond most aftermarket exhausts when we developed our 2 Tip GT style exhaust. We added original style pre-heating ports to ensure that VW engines with a single carburetor and an intake manifold with pre-heat tubes will warm up correctly. The left side heat riser port is directly off the exhaust flange, just like a stock exhaust. The right side pre-heat port is routed through a tube down to the muffler pack and located behind the right side tail pipe. This system allows the high pressure exhaust gases to flow from the port at the exhaust flange, through the intake manifold and out to through the port located at the low pressure side behind the tail pipe.
Why do Pre-heat Tubes Matter?
Have you ever used a can of spray paint for an extended period and noticed how the can gets cold? The same thing can happen to the intake manifold on your classic VW. The air, mixed with fuel, and flowing through the manifold, can cause the intake manifold to "ice up." When this happens, the fuel tends to stick to the cold walls of the manifold. When the fuel sticks to the walls of the manifold, it does not reach the combustion chamber, and it causes hesitation when accelerating from a stop. This is especially common in colder climates or when using larger carburetors (like progressive, EGAS, and IDF/HPMX carbs). VW combated this with the exhaust pre-heater tubes. Without the pre-heater tubes, the exhaust gas cannot flow through to the intake manifold, and the intake manifold doesn't warm up well, if at all. This exhaust should be considered a must for mild-performance Beetles and Karmann Ghias with single carburetors.
Works with Both Heater Boxes and J-Tubes
This VW exhaust system can be used with J-tubes or modified to retain the stock heater box (see the Tech-Tips tab for further explanation). The two exhaust tips are stainless steel so that they stay bright and shiny and while also withstanding the elements. The tail pipes exit out of the stock apron cut outs which allows more ground clearance for lowered cars. Mounting gaskets and heat riser hardware are included.
When installing this 2 Tip glasspack muffler on 1967 and earlier Beetles (and especially 1965 and earlier models that originally had a smaller displacement engine and a smaller engine compartment) clearance may be tight against the rear apron. This is especially true if there has been any damage to the rear of the car. You may have to "muscle" the exhaust into place. This exhaust fits 1300cc to 1600cc based engines, but fitting it on those engines in your early Beetle may take some work.
Black Paint is only a rust inhibitor! If the black paint is not removed before installation, it will burn off in a few hours. Regardless of where you purchase your exhaust, when buying an exhaust system we recommend stripping the exhaust with a good solvent or sanding the paint off and then painting the exhaust system with a high quality, high-temperature exhaust paint. None of our exhausts are warrantied against rust. If you want an exhaust with a durable finish consider a ceramic coated, chrome plated or stainless steel exhaust.
We Recommend Replacing the Exhaust Clamps
We recommend a muffler installation kit when installing a new exhaust system which includes clamps that connect the exhaust to the J-tubes or heater boxes. It is much easier to do the job right the first time vs. having to order new ones down the road if your existing ones don't re-seal properly.

Pre-heat Tube Air Flow
When fuel sticks to the cold walls of an intake manifold it does not reach the combustion chamber, resulting in poor acceleration from stops. This exhaust ports exhaust gases through the pre-heat tubes to warm up the intake manifold, and prevents the fuel from icing up.
