This VW fan shround is designed for 1300-1600cc Type 1, engines with an upright oil cooler. This fan shround comes with in a satin black finish and features 7 internal air directional baffles. This fan shroud is designed for cars without heat as there are no heater duct outlets to connect to the heater box. With an air-cooled Volkswagen engine, the fan shroud is very important. The fan pulls in air while the shroud creates a channeling effect to disperse it towards the oil cooler, cylinder heads, pistons & cylinders. If you are eliminating heater boxes and opting to install J-tubes this fan shroud eliminates the need air ducts for a cleaner look.

Upright Fan Shrouds use a 30mm fan (part number 131119031) to push air through the shroud. Make sure to use the appropriate sized fan as the later model 36mm wide fan will not fit.

NOTE: 36 Horse Power refers to the style and shape of the fan shroud. This fan shroud is made for 1300-1600cc Type 1 based aircooled engines. The best fitting engine tin is the original fan shroud, but it does not work with dual carburetors and it is not made. You have to re-use your originals if you have it, or find it at a junk yard or swap meet.

Our Expert's Take:

When it comes to engine tin, we always prefer original VW tin to aftermarket tin. For our 1971 Super Beetle restoration, we had our pick of the warehouse for the most part, and we used all original engine tin. Sometimes getting ahold of original pieces isn't feasible so there is a place for aftermarket engine tin. Aftermarket tin does not fit as well as original tin, period. Trimming, clearancing and occasionally drilling may be required to get the engine tin components to mount to the engine and other engine tin pieces. With work, the tin can be made to fit and be effective, but do not expect an OEM fit.

Aftermarket fan shrouds may have a gap at either side at the cylinder shrouds. The EMPI Aluminum Shroud Spacer Kit can be installed to ensure a tight fit for proper cooling.
