Upgraded Accelerator Pedal - Installed by JBugs:

Video Overview:

We're back in the shop at work for an unplanned upgrade on the 1967 Sunroof Beetle with a first view of EMPI's upgraded, ball bearing equipped, Accelerator Pedal Kit. Sam is a fan of stock style accelerator pedals in lieu of the often installed "roller" pedals. Roller pedals are commonly installed because the stock accelerator pedal linkage wears out and the accelerator pedal starts to get clunky or notchy. EMPI has engineered a new roller lever with a sealed long life bearing equipped roller, that mounts to an upgraded lever. The upgraded Accelerator Pedal Kit includes a replacement pedal pad, pedal, and the exclusive EMPI lever, roller bearing, and mounting hardware. The accelerator pedal kit will improve the feel and engagement of the throttle for improved drive-ability and smoother acceleration. EMPI's upgraded Accelerator Pedal Kit fits 1967 through 1977 Standard Beetles, 1971 through 1979 Super Beetles, 1967 through 1974 Karmann Ghias and 1973 through 1974 Things. Follow along as Sam installs the Accelerator Pedal Kit and covers the minor modifications needed and then takes the pedal for a test drive!

0:00hi guys Sam jbugs.com we're back again0:02in the shop here at0:07work at work on the 1967 Beetle you guys0:10haven't seen this in a little bit cuz0:12well we've been busy on a lot of things0:14since the New Year and that period uh0:16doing a lot of work at home uh after0:18hours uh on Nathan's car here at work uh0:21not a whole lot's changed still have the0:23uh the unassembled long block that we0:25need to finish turning into a running0:27engine of course we got the 67 we still0:29have plans with back over there we've0:31got uh that damaged aluminum engine case0:34and a whole bunch of products 84 mm0:36flange crankshaft 92 mm thick wall0:40pistons and cylinders Strokers of course0:42uh so we're going to build a large0:45engine if anybody is really good with0:46numbers an 84 by 92 or 92x 84 depending0:50on which way way you want to go with it0:51uh that's going to be a 2234 engine0:53we're going to build that thing into0:55over here we've got a gram scale ring0:57grinder flap wheels and stuff like that0:59so I can go through and end weight our1:02connecting rods we can make certain that1:04our Pistons are uh all match weighted1:06same thing on the connecting rods that's1:08why we got all that stuff but today1:10we're here to work on this little guy1:12right here foot pedal assembly upgraded1:16the biggest upgrade of course is this1:18heavy duty lever with ball bearing1:20equipped roller and a flatbed1:23accelerator pedal with a thicker pin1:26here more strength and much smoother1:30throttle actuation let's get to it so1:33we're going to take that amp kit and get1:35that installed with that upgraded pedal1:37which involves jacking the car up1:39loosening the clutch cable then we can1:41go inside pull off our access plate on1:43the back side of the tunnel disconnect1:45the clutch cable pull out the pedal1:47assembly bring it over the bench make uh1:49one small modification is all that1:51should take I believe depending on if1:53it's got the the little arm on the back1:55side of the accelerator pedal we'll take1:56a look at that if that's there we'll cut1:58that out but other than that it's a2:00pretty much a bolt on a2:06fair and we'll come in here and we'll2:08note where2:10our six2:12shooter clutch cable adjustment nut is2:14at and how much cable sticking out of it2:17or so we can get it back in the same2:18place when we put everything back2:20together so I'm going to disconnect that2:22real quick so you guys can see how nice2:24it is to use this six shooter clutch2:27cable adjustment that2:30you ever seen a clutch cable adjust that2:32easy these things are so nice and this2:36is the stain in the steel one I want to2:38drop this thing on my face2:43buto I don't know where the heck it went2:46but oh there it is there we go six2:49shooter stainless steel clut adjustment2:52nut super super nice and we'll come pull2:56out our AIS2:58plate3:00we've got that pulled out clutch cables3:03disconnected um you know what probably3:05should uh disconnect our throttle cable3:09let's see if I can do that by hand in3:12here yep I can sweet don't have to worry3:15about3:16that then you know what this time I'm3:18going to grab my3:28glasses3:30that and3:31that I3:33guess we'll make life easy and3:35disconnect the brake pedal rod with all3:38that3:39disconnected clip for our brake pedal3:41push rod spring disconnected brake pedal3:44push rod3:46disconnected3:48and perhaps3:50maybe I can have my pedal assembly up3:52there we3:53go just like so p l is out all right six3:58and a half millimeters basically4:00equivalent to/ quarter inch we got all4:03that we've got our pedal assembly we'll4:05pound out that pin and here we can see4:07the stock or accelerated lever it's only4:10got one pivot here this will actually4:13end up doubling up that pivot to give it4:15more4:17stability that came out by hand probably4:19because I cleaned this thing up earlier4:21all right so that's our stock lever4:24which gets upgraded with a double4:26pivoting lever much more cure on its4:30axis also got to push out this4:36pin and you can see that the upgraded4:40shoulder bolt doesn't fit our stock4:42pedal and our stock pedal has this ramp4:45that even that ramp is off AIS so that's4:48why this roller had to be wide and if4:52this gets bent out of shape or this4:55roller gets worn out and this is just a4:59plastic roller all this starts to get5:01very clunky not going to be a problem5:03anymore we've got to drill this out the5:06quarter in drill5:10bit slightly larger than a quarter inch5:13but we'll5:14uh we'll5:17get through them both yeah 26 so Next5:22Step Up is I'm guessing this is5:261764 seems about right 17645:30is our neck size5:38up and with5:44that the minest amount of play so again5:48a 6 and a half millimeter is what they5:50claim it to be if you can get a 6 and5:52half millimeter drill bit you'll5:54probably be better off but 17 64s will5:57do so now the question is is whether or5:59not not oh yep I'm pretty sure we're6:02going need to knock that guy off but6:04let's find out that guy attaches to6:06there this guy goes through6:09here that that6:11way no modification needed on that style6:15so if your Stop's way back there we're6:18good to go and the nice thing is is6:20because this have some some heft to it6:22that uh you can really feel how solid6:25and smooth it is very nice all right so6:31let's do that that that that and that6:34one thing I saw that was going to be6:35kind of a pain is getting this spring6:38fed into that hole so let me grab a pair6:40of needl noose pliers and see that makes6:44anything easier imagine it probably6:46should yeah you know what I'm just going6:49to ever so slightly Bend this tab out to6:54give me some room to put that spring in6:56place ah easy peasy glum and squeezy7:00and then we'll tap it7:04back good as gold got to be up past that7:09step there we7:15go7:17nice all right that's that that's7:24that that's7:26that too many tools in the way7:31all right and there we7:36go we'll get a 13 mm wrench tighten that7:39down and this does have a NY7:42loock oh here that not quite as good as7:46a German bearing from my skateboarding7:48days7:50but and this a upgrade in the sense that7:53we didn't actually have a rubber pad on7:55our pedal7:58before8:03and we'll make certain everything is8:05in and overlapped on the back sides make8:09certain that our pedal pad is8:12secure just like8:18so this guy's ready to go back in the8:21car and there we can see everything that8:24this pedal kit replaces not including of8:27course we didn't have a pedal Pad but so8:29we replaced our pedal pivot8:32spring pin lever roller washer and clip8:38with this kit which is lever roller8:42bearing equipped8:45nut pin with8:48circlip8:50spring shoulder bolt with a8:54nut all that is replaced with heavier8:57Duty items9:00and that pedal is9:01now spring9:04equipped all right hopefully I'm not in9:07your way while I'm doing all this9:08install but if I am I'm sorry always my9:11least favorite part is the the brake9:13pedal spring there we go got it there9:17and got it9:19there there we go Spring's good there9:22put our clip back in place and let's put9:25our bolts back in9:34now I'm probably to need some needle9:36pliers to get the cable in came out so9:38much easier last time I kicked the9:40camera over I'm sorry hopefully you guys9:42can still see I was able to get the9:44cable out of the old lever without9:47disconnecting it from the carburetor but9:49I can't get this thing in without9:52disconnecting it so I've got it9:54disconnected from our carburetor now and9:57let's9:58see10:01and you know what I'm going to10:03disconnect this lever or the spring10:07rather10:08because that just makes it so much10:11easier to get into and work10:13on there well all right well now that10:16we're10:19disconnected I can get some10:21slack10:24and insert the10:28cable10:31needl nose pliers might do some10:33helps there we go10:36beautiful all right that's set let me go10:39hook up the uh throttle cable at the10:42carburetor there we10:46go and I can't push this and pull that10:50at the same time so let me film that10:53make sure that we're getting a full10:58throttle11:02that's floored that arm should be all11:04the way pulled down basically uh11:07perpendicular to the car or parallel11:09with the the ground11:14anyway much more secure much more11:17surefooted is I guess probably the best11:20thing I can11:21say super super11:23nice all right that works now that I've11:26got everything back in place there I11:28will11:29reattach our clutch cable and button up11:32this11:33tunnel I like to take the pedal pad and11:36roll it up underneath there11:39but a11:42very solid11:44smooth accelerator pedal it's also a11:47good upgrade for those guys that you11:49lost your accelerator pedal lever I love11:52clutch cable access plates and now you11:54can see why see how easy it is to uh11:55patch a clutch11:57cable11:59just like that anyway as I was saying12:02it's a great kit for those that somebody12:04may have swapped out your pedal assembly12:07to a roller pedal and you want to go12:09back to a stock12:11pedal as long as they didn't cut off the12:14mount at the bottom right there that's12:16all you need and you can go back to a12:18stock style accelerator pedal the rubber12:21pad yeah we need to replace those but12:23we'll get there that's all there is to12:27that other than now I've got go12:29underneath the car and reattach the12:31clutch cable and do all that stuff but12:33you guys have seen that process that's12:36nothing12:37[Music]12:51new I don't know at what point my12:53microphone stopped working in the last12:55segment of video or like actually12:57technically three segments of video ago12:59but it did I didn't catch it so I got to13:03go for another13:27Drive13:51super13:54nice I'll give a a rolling example of13:57why I like SB da and vacuum Advanced13:59Distributors this is second14:02gear the car is14:05idling and14:07bucking and I can just roll into the14:12throttle and she takes off smoothly14:15let's see you do that with a double on914:18distributor that throttle is14:24just with that that's the MP 98 10 93-14:30upgraded accelerator pedal kit installed14:32pretty simple other than a little bit of14:34drilling and some fidgeting with that14:36accelerator cable to get it back in14:37which it's a little bit less clearance14:39against the tunnel versus a stock one so14:41it's a little bit more difficult to get14:42in but once it's14:45in it's in and on that note this is Sam14:48with jbugs.com saying world's full of14:50good people can't find one be one later14:57guys
