Cal Look versus American Look:

There is only one difference between “American Look” and “Cal Look” window seals. The groove to accept the chrome trim. American window seals have the groove. Cal look seals do not have the groove. It's the exact same rubber compound, fit, function, and quality is the same.

American Window Rubber

  • American window seals have a groove in the rubber to accept the aluminum window molding
  • Most Beetles that were exported from Germany to the US came with the aluminum trim in the window rubber
  • Thus, this style of rubber seal is referred to as "American"

Cal Look Window Rubber

  • Cal Look window seals do not have the groove to accept the aluminum trim
  • Called "Cal Look" which is short for "California Look" where the style originated in the 1960s
  • Removing all of the chrome trim from the vehicle including the window trim, body trim, bumpers, and more gives the car a completely different look

How Much Power?

Horsepower is not solely determined by the long block and what is inside. Other factors such as carburetion, exhaust, ignition and tuning must be considered. The only true way to determine horsepower of any given engine is to mount it to a dyno and measure the power output. Keep in mind horsepower is only 1 part of the puzzle. A powerful engine in a car with larger diameter tires (like in a Baja Bug application) might struggle to keep up with a stock engine, in a stock application.

Our rough engine horsepower estimates are:
60 HP for the 1600cc.
70 HP for the 1776cc.
80 HP for the 1914cc.

Notes on Sheet Metal:

  • Virtually all sheet metal parts are sent with a black, sprayed-on, rust inhibitor. This is NOT a paint or a primer. The black paint that comes on most sheet metal items must be removed before applying primer to the sheet metal.
  • Expect scratches, minor dents, dings, and imperfections. These are considered normal. You will likely have to perform minor body work on any aftermarket sheet metal during the installation and restoration process. This is a universal issue across the entire classic car industry due to the nature of the product.
  • Large dents would be considered excessive damage. All sheet metal is carefully inspected prior to shipping for any major dents. Any sheet metal that is received dented must be presented to the shipping carrier for a damage claim, regardless of the condition of the box.
  • Test fit the all sheet metal before painting. Once body work or paint work has been done to any sheet metal item, it can't be returned! There are no exceptions!

Casey's Sheet Metal Disclaimer

These front beams are shipped in large crates from the manufacturer.

There may be minor imperfections such as chips, dings, and blemishes on the black, painted finish that occur during shipping. These imperfections are considered normal and are purely cosmetic in nature. They have no impact on the performance of the beam whatsoever.

If you are looking for a "show quality beam" out of the box, we also offer AirKewld front beams, but they cost significantly more.

Do do not mount the fuel filter in the engine compartment.

We recommend mounting the fuel filter near the transmission, close to where metal fuel line exits the chassis.

The ethanol blended in fuels today deteriorate the fuel hose faster. If/when this occurs, there's the risk that the connection at the fuel filter fails. If this happens in the engine compartment where things are hot and the distributor is making sparks, your car catches on fire. Yes, changing the fuel filter for maintenance is more difficult when the fuel filter is near the transmission, but it is much less difficult than dealing with an engine fire. Regardless of where your filter was or what you've seen in the past, we recommend that you re-locate it out of the engine compartment and do not under any circumstance mount it in the engine compartment above the distributor.

Before You Install:

Make sure your felt channels and scrapers are in good, operating condition before installing the new window regulator. If your felt channels & scrapers are worn, have crooked guides, or are damaged, the new window regulator will have to work against all those items. Take a few moments and ensure everything is working as it should so your window rolls up and down well for years to come.

  • Grease the gear, crank and cable mechanisms (as applicable) to prolong the life of the window regulator. White lithium grease works well.
  • Before securing the window to the regulator, check that the window can move freely against the inside & outside scrapers
  • Before securing the window to the regulator, make sure that the window moves up and down within the felt channels without excess resistance.

If there is friction lubricate the felt channels & scrapers, inspect them and replace as needed. If everything is in good shape, silicone spray can help to lube the seals. Spray them all down, generously!

Oil Pressure Relief Valves & Springs
Stock engines should use the stock oil pressure relief spring and piston found in kit 113198033. If you need higher oil pressure (like when using a full flow oil system or a remote filter) you will want to use 9202 or 9201 depending on the year of your vehicles engine. Oil pressure boosters kits will make the oil pressure higher, and on a stock engine will usually cause oil to come out of other places it shouldn't like the crank pulley.

Notes on Stock Wheels:

  • Check fitment before installing tires and have your tire shop check that the wheel is true (straight) before they install the tires. Once mounted, they cannot be returned.

  • These wheels may have minor imperfections.

  • When cleaning, test any soaps or chemicals in an inconspicuous area (such as behind the hubcap) to ensure the substance does not discolor the paint.

Triple Chromed vs. Single Chromed

Which bumper is right for you?
Triple Chromed Bumper

  • Same metal thickness as single chrome bumpers
  • Same stamping and design as single chrome bumpers
  • Three layers of nickel plating
  • More reflective and shinier than single chrome
  • Chrome finish will last for years with occasional maintenance
  • Great for quality restorations
Single Chromed Bumper

  • Same metal thickness as triple chrome bumpers
  • Same stamping and design as triple chrome bumpers
  • Single layer of nickel plating
  • Less bright and reflective as triple chrome
  • Expect chrome to pit over time even with maintenance
  • Perfect for budget builds, patina, or if you plan to paint or powdercoat the bumper

Chrome Maintenance and What to Expect:

Chrome plating metal is an electro-plating process that is highly regulated due to the chemicals involved. Chrome products made today don't go through the same preparation & plating procedures they did 60 years ago. Many chemicals contained mercury and cyanide and have been banned for environmental reasons.

  • We highly recommend maintaining any chrome on your vehicle by applying a car wax or detailing spray on a regular basis
  • Consider coating the backside of your bumper with paint or a rust inhibitor.
  • Triple chrome bumpers that are properly maintained and kept in dry, non-salty-air environments will last for years
  • If you don't maintain the chrome and/or your vehicle is exposed to moisture and/or salt, there is a higher chance that you will see rusting and pitting.
  • Single chrome bumpers are economically priced and more succeptible to rusting and pitting

VW Engine Tin and Chrome Dress-Up Kits.

VW Engine Tin and Chrome Dress-Up Kits VW Engine Tin is crucial to ensuring your VW engine runs cool. The tin directs air from the top portion of the engine compartment through the oil cooler, cylinder heads and cylinders. It also keeps that same hot air from re-entering the engine compartment which would increase the engine temperature. We carry most all the engine sheet metal and tin that is needed to keep your engine COOL. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT that all the engine tin be in place to keep your engine running properly. Unless you have a Baja Beetle or kit car, etc with an OPEN engine compartment, it is imperative to keep the engine tin in place.

When purchasing VW engine tin components it is important to know what configuration engine you have and the components on it. Check if you have a VW single port engine or dual port engine, are running heater boxes, and heat risers.

Black Engine Tin
VW purposely painted the engine tin black to aid in cooling. The black paint disperses the heat better than other colors and finishes.
Chrome Engine Tin
Nothing stands out like chrome. Chrome does reflect heat back into the engine compartment

Fan Shroud

The main and most important part of the cooling system. The fan shroud literally houses the fan which is mounted to the generator or alternator and cools your engine. There are two main differences in the fan shrouds VW used:

Upright Oil Cooler: Stock oil cooler used by VW up to 1970. This oil cooler sits in-line with the fan, inside the fan shroud.

Doghouse Oil Cooler: VW changed to the "doghouse" oil cooler in 1971. The doghouse oil cooler sits offset from the fan, in a small compartment on the backside of the fan shroud.

Doghouse Fan Tin

Used only on the doghouse fan shroud, the doghouse tin is a two piece duct that directs the air exiting the fan shroud through the front engine tin, out of the engine compartment.

View More:

Cylinder Shrouds

The cylinder shrouds bolt to the cylinder heads, shrouding the heads and cylinders. The cylinder shrouds are offered for the single port heads (used by VW thru 1970) or dual port heads which VW started using in 1971.

View More:

Valve Covers

Original valve covers are a stamped steel cover. They are held in place to the cylinder head with a metal bale. VWs are synonymous with leaking oil and these are one of the main culprits. New valve covers and gaskets might just stop your VW engine from marking its territory.

View More:

Cylinder Cooling Tins

Originally used by VW on Type 3s. VW performance engine builders have been using these on their engines to assist in cooling the cylinders. They are installed BEFORE the cylinder heads are installed. The cooling tin is most commonly held to the cylinders with safety wire.

View More:

Alt/Gen Stand

Your alternator or generator is mounted to the engine case on the generator or alternator stand. If you are swapping from an original generator you will have to change the stand to the aftermarket stand which is clearanced for the larger front housing of the alternator.

View More:

Backing Plates

The backing plates are mounted to the back of your generator or alternator and then bolted to the fan shroud.

View More:

Alt/Gen Pulley

VW generator and alternator pulleys are a two piece unit. Shims are used in between the pulley halves to tighten or loosen the belt. Less shims between the two pieces tightens the belt, more shims between loosens the belt. Be sure to put the remaining shims on the outside of the pulley before the spacer and nut.

View More:

Distributor Clamp

The distributor clamp is a simple item but very important. It bolts to the case and keeps the distributor held in place. Ensuring your timing is set properly is essential to keep your engine running well and most importantly cool.

View More:

Air Filter

VW used an OIL BATH air filter assembly on early models. In the 70s they started using paper filters in a large plastic housing. We offer a number of different style air filter assemblies from paper, to foam and gauze. They come in a numerous diameters and heights.

View More:

Breast Plate

The breast plate bolts to the engine case BEFORE the crank pulley is installed. It bolts to the cylinder shrouds and rear engine tin on either side.

View More:

Crank Pulley

The lower drive pulley on the engine, attached directly to the engine crank shaft. We offer the pulley in a variety of different styles and sizes from stock to chrome, in steel or aluminum.

View More:

Rear Engine Tin

The rear engine tin is actually the first piece of tin you see looking at the engine from the rear of the car. Named rear because it is at the rear of the car, this is a very important piece of tin. It sits above the muffler or exhaust header and keeps that heat from entering back into the engine compartment.

View More:

Firewall

The firewall from VW is a tarboard which helps in sound deadening and heat insulation. We offer stainless steel or aluminum decorative pieces that help dress up the appearance of the engine compartment. Be sure to install a sound deadener such as the tarboard before installing an aftermarket firewall.

View More:

Heater Channel Kits

Used in conjunction with factory heater boxes. These help direct air on the bottom side of the engine. They bolt to the bottom side of the cylinder shrouds, the engine case and the heater boxes.

View More:

Front Engine Tin

The front engine tin is located below the firewall. It is bolted to the left and right cylinder shrouds and seals off the engine compartment behind the fan shroud. Your throttle cable and fuel line pass through this tin coming from underneath the car, into the engine compartment. The late model doghouse tin has an opening for the doghouse fan tin to exit through.
