This is my 1972 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia. It is a 3-speed auto-stick (no clutch) I have loved this body style since the first time I saw it as a kid. I bought the car from my stepfather. I never knew he had this car (actually, it was his mother's car who had recently passed away and he was storing it.) After his mother had passed, everything in the house and garage had to be sold. I saw it in his garage, I told him unless he is giving it to his son, he had better not sell it to anyone but me.
I loved that car from the 1st time I saw it! It had approx. 37,00 original miles on it when I bought it. It now has approx 39K miles on it. It was one of the few Karmann Ghia's that had factory installed air conditioning.
The car was kept in a garage in a low-lying area by a creek. When a torrential rain came, it flooded the garage and the car. My guess, based on the limited damage, is that the car was in 8-12 inches of water. It was not running when I had the car towed to a mechanic. I was lucky to find a vintage VW mechanic to get it back on the road!
It has been an absolute treat owning this car and learning the VW ways. My (3) boys love to drive this car, and it has brought us closer together. I'll keep this car as long as I can and plan to give it to one of my sons. Love those VWs! Cheers!
