What is a Z-Bar?

VW nearly continually refined and updated their models and the Z-Bar (or factory camper compensator, not really a sway bar) was evidence of that. Z-Bars came as standard equipment on 1967 and 1968 Beetles and Karmann Ghias with manual transmissions. The design of the swing axle transmission, although strong, does lend itself to some drawbacks especially when one side of the rear suspension is unloaded. The factory Z-Bar compensates and transfers some of the load to the opposite side axle tube to help prevent the unloaded wheel from "tucking" (riding on it's inner edge).
