Replacement cases
These cases were VW engine cases that were sold from VW but never issued in an actual production vehicle. All are dual-relief cases with 100mm oil passages.
Information from a 5/73 USA service bulletin issued 5/73:
Engines with the re-manufactured symbol, a letter, a number and ending with X, indicates a VW Exchange engine. Before Oct., 1968 the X was not stamped onto the block.
From April of 1972 Shortblocks were sold with the VW remanufacture symbol followed by a letter. No numbers were used, you were to stamp in the old engine number.
Exchange engines
These engines are normally marked with a VW recycle symbol and an X at the end.

VW Fan Shrouds.
Upright vs. Doghouse Fan Shrouds.
Look at the back of your Fan Shroud, does it dis-connect from the oil cooler or does the shroud cover the oil cooler? JBUGS recommends you check what configuration your vehicle is currently running before you order as it may NOT be original after 30-40 years.
Upright Oil Cooler Fan Shroud.
Air cooled VW's through 1970 originally featured the "upright-style" oil cooler that blew cool air from the back of fan shroud through the oil cooler fins next to the shroud.
Doghouse Oil Cooler Fan Shroud.
Cars after 1971 originally had a redesigned "doghouse-style" fan shroud and oil cooler that were more effective than the upright oil cooler to help cool a bigger 1600cc engine.
VW Rear Engine Tin.
VW Heater Boxes and Fresh Air ducts.
If you plan on running heater boxes be sure to select a fan shroud with fresh air/heater ducts and rear engine tin with fresh air/heater cut outs. If you live in a warm climate, have a custom engine, or do not plan to run heat/fresh air be sure to choose a closed fan shroud and rear engine tin.
WITH HEAT -This option includes the ducts on the front of the fan shrouds and rear engine tin, allowing you connect your fan to your heater boxes with fresh air hoses.
WITH OUT HEAT -This option features closed fan shrouds and rear engine tin. Perfect for hiding components beneath your engine bay and eliminating the need to plug your fan shroud.
Heat Riser Cut Outs.
Heat Risers are tubes that start at the muffler or header and connect up to the manifold underneath the carburetor. They utilize the heat from exhaust air to keep the moisture absorbed in the air/fuel mixture from freezing. The heat also helps keep the air/fuel mixture vaporized as it moves through the manifold down its path to the heads.
Dual Carbs do not require heat risers as they lead directly to the heads, no long winding manifold. Also, some aftermarket exhaust do not run heat risers because they do not expel exhaust gas the same way original German mufflers did. Heat Risers should have an inlet and an outlet, but this cycle is interrupted by modern exhaust systems designs that do not create the vacuum necessary to circulate the air flow.
VW Front Engine Tin
VW Heater Boxes and Fresh Air ducts.
Upright Oil Cooler Front Engine Tin
Original Single Port Engine design -for early VW engines. Hot air passed through the upright oil cooler inside the fan shroud and vented out over the piston cylinders. This design made one side of the engine run hotter than the other.
Doghouse Oil Cooler Front Engine Tin
Dual Port VW Engine design. Air passed through the external doghouse oil cooler - then vented out behind the engine under the transmission area. As a result of the improved design, engine tended to run cooler.
VW Cylinder Shrouds.
Single Port Engine & Dual Port Engine Cylinder Shrouds.
Cylinder Cooling Shrouds directs cool air from fan shroud over hot cylinders and out under engine. Keeps heat from your heads out on your intake and engine bay. Please note if you need Single Port or Dual Port, depending on your engine configuration.
VW Alternator / Generator Stand.
VW Alternator / Generator Stands and Straps.
VW Alternator / Generator Stands support your alternator or generator as well as provide a location to fill your oil.
Oil fillers are sold separately, and available in multiple styles to fit your car.
1 deflector plate and 2 stand gaskets will be needed for installation. Both gaskets to be installed, one on top of deflector plate, one below. You will notice 3 louvered "scoops" on the deflector plate. These scoops should dip down in to the opening, and the openings should open towards the passenger side of the engine block. This will help "deflect" engine oil back in to the engine case rather than help it exit.
NOTE: 1200cc Cylinder Heads are not made new. Available from an used-parts vendor, or junkyard only.
1300-1600 are interchangable. Can NOT be bolted on to a 1200cc case.

What Carburetor do I need?
The best way to identify what Carburetor you need is to find the model number stamped on the side of carburetor float bowl on your current Carburetor.
(e.g. Usually you will find a model number like "30PICT" or "34PICT" stamped on carburetor body.)
If you're not sure what Carburetor you require the next step would be to identify if you have a Single Port or Dual Port Engine. Please keep in mind this information is for stock engines only. We have no way of knowing what is on your car if it has been modified.
Single Port Carburetors:
It is very important to know the difference between single port and dual port intake manifolds. Although all Volkswagen engines using carburetors through 1970 came with Single Port Engines and Carburetors, many have changed to dual port engines and intake manifolds.
Check the Manifold. If it is one solid continuous unit from carburetor to heads, you have a single port carburetor and Single port long block engine.
Single port intake is bolted to heads using 10mm nuts on 6mm studs.
Single Port Carburetors: |
28PCI # 28PICT Models * 30PICT Models 31PICT Models |
# 28PCI Carburetor is not made new.
* 28PICT Carburetor is not made new
The 30 or 31 PICT Carburetor can be bolted on for either the 28PCI or 28PICT
model Carburetors. The 30/31PICT carbs have a slip on fuel inlet as opposed
to the threaded fitting on some 28PICT carburetors. Our replacement carburetors
have a 12 volt choke element which can be used on a 6 volt system but will take
twice as long to warm up. We do not offer a 6 volt choke.
30 and 31 PICT carburetors are interchangeable.
The 30PICT carburetor does not have an idle shut off valve which came on the 31PICT carburetors.
Dual Port Carburetors:
A "dual port" carburetor does not have two ports! It is just a largercarburetor designed for use with the larger, dual port intake manifold.
The easiest way to tell the difference between the single and dual port intake is that on Dual Port Intake Manifolds, there are either black or orange sleeves on either side of the intake manifold between the carburetor and the cylinder head. Dual port intake is bolted down using 13 mm nuts on 8mm studs.
If your engine has this, your engine (despite the year of the car) has a dual port intake manifold and would use the 34PICT VW carburetor, also known as the "dual port carburetor".

34PICT Models |
The 34PICT-3 carburetor can be used as a replacement for the 34PICT-4 carburetor but does not have the throttle deceleration lever.
What is JBUGS Policy on Carburetor returns?
WE WILL NOT ACCEPT ANY RETURNS ON INSTALLED CARBURETORS.
Our Carburetors are factory bench tested, adjusted, and ready to install. They are guaranteed to work properly right out of the box, free of all manufacturing defects.
That's great! But what does that have to do with my Carburetor?
If your engine is currently not running well and continues to run poorly after a new carburetor has been installed, the problem is either not the carb, or there may be additional problems hindering performance.Carburetors will not be refunded once installed. Consider your purchase a spare. We highly recommend you check, diagnose and exhaust every other possibility before purchasing a new carburetor.Usually these problems are far less expensive than the cost of a new carburetor!
Why would I purchase a Carburetor from JBUGS if I can't return it?
Only INSTALLED carburetors will not be refunded. The reason is simple- you wouldn't want to purchase a used carburetor that a previous customer tinkered with or adjusted. More importantly we will not sell you parts that are not going to work. We stand by our carburetors because we focus on quality parts. Our Carburetors are guaranteed to run! Experience has taught us that 99.99% of the time the new carburetor is not defective.
We strive to offer competitive prices on the best VW parts. In order to keep cost down for our customers we can not afford to ship out brand new carburetors for people to trouble shoot their engines. Often times they find the problem elsewhere and we are left with carburetors we can not sell.
If you truly feel one of our new carburetors is defective, you can order and pay for a replacement and send back the other carb back at your cost for inspection. If the carburetor is not defective it will be returned to you at your cost. If the carburetor is indeed found defective, we will refund you the cost of the carburetor and OUR shipping costs to you.

More About Our VW Starters, Generators, & Alternators:
At California Pacific/ JBugs, we strive to simplify the process of finding the parts you need to restore your air-cooled Volkswagen. Our VW Starters, Generators, and Alternators are divided into sub categories based on the model and year that the part fits.
All Volkswagens built in 1966 or earlier were originally made with a 6 Volt Generator. Many of those have since been converted to a 12 Volt Generator or an Alternator. We do offer 6 Volt Generators for the early Volkswagen Beetle, Karmann Ghia and Bus. If you would like to convert to an Alternator, you can purchase a VW Alternator Conversion Kit HERE.
We offer a variety of parts that you might need when replacing your VW Alternator or VW Generator HERE . An alternator/ generator stand supports your alternator or generator and also provides a location to fill up your oil. Oil fillers are sold separately HERE and are available in multiple styles to fit your VW.
