The VW 3 Prong Brake Light Switch threads into the master cylinder and operates the brake lights and the dash brake warning light. It is a simple open-close circuit switch with power in and power out of the 2 parallel terminals with the third terminal powering the dash light. The switch is compatible with 6 or 12 volt systems.

If you have a 1968-1969 model with the original master cylinder equipped for three brake light switches, you will need three 2-prong brake light switches instead of this 3-prong switch.

The brake light switch is a simple open/close circuit. It does not matter which terminal is powered (input) and which terminal is output. The wire from the fuse box to the switch and the wire to the brake light bulb is black with a red stripe from the factory. Later models might have black input wire. On three terminal switches the input and output terminals are the two parallel terminals.

The 3 terminal switches have an output signal which is wired to the brake light warning switch light on the dash. It is a red wire.
