Flipping the outer tie rod ends is a pretty extreme modification but for extremely lowered VWs, it is the best way to bring the steering geometry back to normal. Installing the tie rod relocation bushings requires drilling out the spindle arm with a 5/8" drill bit. We recommend removing the spindle from the car and using a drill press to ensure the hole is drilled accurately. Flipping the tie ends will also gain more tie rod to body clearance for lowered VWs. The bushings are intended for use on 1954 through 1977 Standard Beetles, 1971 through 1979 Super Beetles and 1956 through 1974 Karmann Ghias but may be used on other models as well.

When should you consider flipping your tie rods? If your lowered VW outer tie rod ends sit higher than the pitman (steering) arm, you may consider installing the tie rod relocation kit. Once installed, the tie rod ends can be installed into the bottom of the steering arm on the spindle. This helps to bring the tie rod angle closer to stock and provides more clearance at the body as well.

Late Model Tie Rod Ends are required

The bushings accept the later model 1968.5-1977 "large" tie rod ends so 1968.5 and earlier models will have to swap out to late model tie rod ends:
