EMPI's 5 Piece VW Engine Mounting Hardware Kit includes the Starter D Bolt (which installs through the starter, the transmission and engine), the Upper Left Engine Bolt (which installs through the transmission and threads into the threaded boss behind the oil cooler) and three engine mounting nuts (one each for the lower two engine studs and one for the D bolt). The engine mounting kit is specifically for 1971 and later Type 1 based engine cases that have the threaded boss at the upper left. Earlier engine cases can use the mounting hardware kit but will need one more 10x1.5mm nut for the upper engine bolt. The engine hardware kit fits 1971 though 1977 Standard Beetles, 1971 though 1979 Super Beetles, 1971 though 1974 Karmann Ghias, 1971 Type 2 Bus models, 1971 though 1973 Type 3s and 1973 though 1974 Things. Earlier engine cases can use the mounting hardware kit but will need one more 10x1.5mm nut for the upper engine bolt as 1970 and earlier upright oil cooler cases do not have the threaded boss behind the oil cooler.

Note - not campatible with Auto-stick or Automatic transmission equipped VW models.

Engine Transmission Mounting Hardware

The “D” Starter Bolt inserts through the starter, transmission, and engine case. The flat side of "D" bolt head rest against the starter which prevents it from spinning while bolting down. It is held in place with a 10 X 1.5 mm nut.

The Upper Engine Bolt installs through the transmission to the engine block. On pre 1971 models it threads into a loose 10 X 1.5 mm nut. On '71-later models it threads into the captive nut which is attached behind the oil cooler.

2 Engine Case Mounting Studs are used at the bottom of the transmission bell housing.

Depending on the year, either 3 or 4 10 X 1.5 mm nuts are used to attach the engine to transmission.
