EMPI GT-5 VW Performance Camshaft - Type 1 - 1200-1600 - for 1.1 Rockers

This is a competition cam and is a great for light weight limited classes where stock displacement and stock rockers are required. This cam will even work well in tiny little 1200 "40 Horse" engines. Performance will increase as the ports and valve sizes increase to take advantage of the high lift of the cam. Stock 1.1:1 rockers are the limit for this cam and it provides good down low power in a wide range of engines with performance similar to the VZ-14 cam.

EMPI's GT-5 cam pulls well up to about 5000 RPM. Dual springs and HD rocker shafts are necessities. It will work with stock carburetors but power will increase with the more carburetion you give it. This is a low to mid range cam with tons of low end torque. Keep in mind that due to the short duration and high lift, your overall engine life will be decreased. The super fast ramps put a lot of strain on the cam, lifters and even the lifter bores in the engine case.

EMPI GT-5 Performance Camshaft Specifications:

  • .458" Valve Lift with 1.1:1 Rockers
  • Cam Lift .416"
  • Duration 270°
  • Lobe Center 108°

Valve Spring Recommendations:

  • Dual "Hi-Rev" w/1.1:1 Rockers

Recommended Rocker Assemblies:

  • HD Rocker Shafts & 1.1:1

Recommended Compression Ratio:

  • 8:1 to 8.25:1

RPM Range:

  • Idle to 5000 w/1.1:1 Rockers

Recommended Carburetion:

  • Stock to Dual, 2 Barrels.

Installation Notes:

All Type 1 performance cams are 3 Bolt, "early style" or "flat cams" and fit Type 1,2 & 3, 1200cc(40hp) to 1600cc based engines. The cam requires a separately sold, bolt on cam gear and must be used with a "flat cam" style oil pump. You can add the gear with the option above, or check out the links below:

New lifters should be installed whenever a new cam is being used. Never reuse old lifters with a new cam! Here are a few of options to consider:

JBugs along with most engine builders, racers and auto enthusiasts, recommends using an engine oil with ZDDP or ZDTP or a ZDDP/ZDTP additive in your oil for all flat tappet camshaft engines!
