The EMPI 40 HPMX dual carburetor kit includes standard aluminum manifolds, which, due to their offset, will only work with 36-horsepower styled aftermarket fan shrouds. The 40 HPMX carburetors are test-run as a matched pair, pre-set for left and right sides, with float levels checked and adjusted. This dual carb kit includes aluminum hex bar linkage, chrome air cleaner assemblies, a coil relocation bracket, and all necessary hardware to convert from a single carburetor to a dual-carburetor setup. It fits 1500-1600cc-based Type 1 upright dual-port engines. The HPMX carburetors feature a vacuum port, allowing compatibility with vacuum advance distributors.

The Weber carburetors today aren't the same was what we had 20+ years ago. The EMPI HPMX carburetors are the best Weber IDF style carburetors out there and we now prefer these over anything with the Weber name. If you want dual carbs and you have a 1776cc-2000cc engine, the EMPI Dual 40 HPMX kit is the way to go.

What Version Carb Kit do I need?

EMPI offers three different versions of what is essentially the same dual carburetor kit. The difference in the kits are the intake manifolds and air cleaner assemblies.

47-7317 - Standard Intake Manifolds - Chrome Air Cleaner Caps - Can only be used with Aftermarket 36 Horse Style Fan Shrouds.

47-8317 - Offset Intake Manifolds - Chrome Air Cleaner Caps - Can be used with all Type 1 fan shrouds (slight clearancing may be needed).

47-9317 - Offset Intake Manifolds - Billet Air Cleaner Caps - Can be used with all Type 1 fan shrouds (slight clearancing may be needed).

What size carburetors do I need?

In general we use 40mm carburetors for engines up to 2000ccs. 44mm carbs are used for 2000cc and larger engines. Cams, heads, valve sizes and other factors will determine which carburetor set up works best. At the end of the day though, when in doubt, go larger as venturis and jets can all be changed to make a larger carb suit a smaller engine as needed.

Why choose an EMPI HPMX carburetor over a Weber IDF?

Don't get us wrong, we're suckers for performance and when it comes to VW engines and performance carburetors, few will argue with the quality and performance that comes with the Weber name. That being said, there are better Weber versions than others with the Italian versions being the more preferred. So when EMPI decided to take on the task of reproducing one of the most popular VW performance carburetors they went to the best and made it better. They started with a 44 IDF carburetor as a base for the casting for both the 40HMPX and the 44HPMX carburetors. Some of the first improvements was updated circuitry and profiled throttle shafts to flow better right out of the box compared to the Weber. Now on their 4th generation, having made improvements along the way the HMPX carbs now feature a cast in enrichment plate block off, a vacuum port and extended idle jet tubes to help eliminate clogged idle jets. So, why choose an HPMX Carburetor? Because it works just as well, if not better than a IDF carburetor, it's less expensive, and all the components, jets, gaskets and parts are all interchangeable with the IDF. Why pay more for less?!
