The Bosch amp alternator delivers 55 amps out charging output at 12 volts and is the most popular charging choice for classic VWs. This Bosch alternator can be used on any classic VW with an upright, Type 1, 1300-1600cc based engine. Based on the original fitment, this includes 1961 through 1977 Standard Beetles, 1971 through 1979 Super Beetles, 1960 through 1971 Type 2 Bus models and 1973 through 1974 Things. But if you have a Type 1, 1300-2332cc engine, this alternator will work.
The Bosch AL82N is internally regulated. If you have an externally regulated alternator or if you are switching over from a 12V generator, you will have to modify the wiring.
Please see the "Tech Tips" tab for more information regarding the wiring modifications required.
If you have a 1966 and earlier model that still has a 6V generator, switching to this Bosch alternator will require a different stand, backing plate and pulley as the 6 volt units are not compatible with the alternator. We include all of these items in our alternator conversion kit.
1967 and later models that use a generator may have to swap the alternator stand as the stock generator stand can not be used with the new alternator.
55 Amps is enough output for most vehicles that do not have big stereo systems with powerful amps. If your classic VW has a stereo system with multiple amplifiers or if you have accessories that consume singificant amperage, you may want to consider a chrome 75A alternator or a black 75 amp alternator, but these higher output options are not made by Bosch. If you don't have a big stereo system, this Bosch alternator is perfect.
If you are replacing your alternator, don't forget about a new alternator belt. If you are replacing the alternator, check your belt. If you are switching from a generator, you have to change the belt. If you already have an alternator, it's safer and easier to replace the belt now versus waiting until it is worn out.
