EMPI GT-1 Cam for Classic VW Engines

The EMPI GT-1 cam can be used with stock heads but performance will increase as the ports and valve sizes increase. You can run this an "upgraded replacement" for a stock cam in stock engines or as a very streetable, performance cam in a 1776, 1835 or 1914. Whether using it with stock (1.1) or 1.25 ratio rockers, the EMPI GT-1 provides good useable power in a wide range of engines with performance similar to the tried and true W-100 cam from Engle.

EMPI's GT-1 cam pulls well up to about 5500 RPM, or up to 5700 if you swap to 1.25 rockers, dual springs and HD rocker shafts. A stock carburetor (with a rough idle), a single 2 barrel carb, or a pair of dual, single or dual barrel carbs can all be used with the GT-1. The more air and fuel you let it control, the more power it will give you, to a certain point anyway!

Valve Spring Recommendations:

• Single "Hi-Rev" w/1.1:1 Rockers
• Dual "Hi-Rev" w/1.25:1 Rockers

Recommended Rocker Assemblies:

• HD Rocker Shafts & 1.1:1 or 1.25:1

Recommended Compression Ratio:

• 7.5:1 to 8:1

RPM Range:

• Idle to 5500 w/1.1:1 Rockers
• Idle to 5700 w/1.25:1 Rockers

Recommended Carburetion:

• Stock to Dual, 2 Barrels as displacement increases and performance is desired.

Installation Notes:

All Type 1 performance cams are 3 Bolt, "early style" or "flat cams" and fit Type 1,2 & 3, 1200cc(40hp) to 1600cc based engines. New lifters should be installed whenever a new cam is being used. Never reuse old lifters with a new cam! Here are a few of options to consider:

JBugs along with most engine builders, racers and auto enthusiasts, recommends using an engine oil with ZDDP or ZDTP or a ZDDP/ZDTP additive in your oil for all flat tappet camshaft engines!
