1954-1977 Standard Beetle, Karmann Ghia, Type 3 & Thing Steering Box Bolt Lock Plate

  • Secures steering box bracket bolt to the steering box.
  • Fits 1954-1977 Standard Beetle, Karmann Ghia, Type 3 & Thing
  • Sold individually, 2 needed per car

Why Lock Plates?

The VW Steering Box Lock Plate installs in between the steering box bracket bolt and the bracket with two of the ears laying over the bracket. Once the bolts are installed and torqued down (to 18-22 ft/lbs) the end tabs of the plates are tapped over the heads of the bolts to prevent them from loosening. The 2 bolts are the only things that hold the steering box to the beam of your VW. These 2 large bolts aren't torqued very tightly for the size as they are bolting through a piece of stamped steel. VW doesn't want the bolts tightened to or anywhere near their holding strength as they would deform the sheet metal bracket that holds the box in place, so tighten them to spec, and use the lock plates to make sure the bolts don't back out.
