Why Lock Plates?

The VW Steering Damper Lock Plate installs in around the end of the steering damper before the bolt is threaded into place. Once the bolt is installed and torqued down (to 18 ft/lbs) the end of the plate is tapped over the head of the bolt to prevent it from loosening. VW was very cautious with steering components and uses lock plates regularly to ensure the steering components do not come loose. A loose or missing bolt in the steering system can lead to a complete loss of vehicle control!
