Why Lock Plates?

The VW Steering Box to Shaft Coupler Lock Plate installs in around the steering box shaft coupler before the bolt is threaded into place. Once the bolt is installed and torqued down (to 14-18 ft/lbs) the end of the plate at the bolt head is tapped over the heads of the bolts to prevent it from loosening. VW was very cautious with steering components and uses lock tabs regularly to ensure the steering components do not come loose. A loose or missing bolt in the steering system can lead to a complete loss of vehicle control!
